I usually play as Rena, so my party choices go as such, in order of my primary fighting party at the last battle:
Rena, Dias, Bowman, Celine, Claude, Noel, Chisato, Ashton
If I elect to get Opera and Ernest, this is how I set up:
Rena, Dias, Opera, Celine, Claude, Ernest, Chisato, Bowman
If I elect to recruit Precis instead:
Rena, Dias, Ashton, Celine, Claude, Noel, Chisato, Precis
If I choose Opera, Ernest, and Precis:
Rena, Dias, Opera, Celine, Claude, Precis, Ernest, Chisato
As you can see, I don't much like Claude. I much prefer the skill of Dias in a battle. His killer moves are a bit slower than Claude's and not as reliable all the time, but he hits harder. Equip him with an atlas ring (2 is better) and watch the heads roll.
A note on Noel: I use him only if I HAVE to. If I can get around recruiting him, I will do so every time. His spells aren't that good, in my mind, and I think he's a wimp.
I really do prefer Bowman to Precis as Bowman's Spirit Attack can hit twice. It's a great killer move.
A word on Claude's scenario: Claude, Rena, Bowman, and Leon make a deadly team. I regret that Leon is only recruitable in Claude's scenario. Leon and Dias would have made a kick ass team. Combine Leon's spells and Dias's killer moves and I'm sure the enemy would mess their pants on their way off of the battlefield.
One final word on Party Choices: I personally think it is very important to keep Rena in at all times, no matter who you play as. Her healing spells may very well be the only thing to save your butt many times over. Tell her to aid friends and stand back and watch her work. Rena is the one character I will never replace for any reason, even if I'm just trying to level up my other characters.

The different endings rely on how the characters feel about each other at the end of the game. If you play it through with Claude and Rena in the same party, the chances of a Claude/Rena ending is pretty darned good, however, you CAN play around with things and alter the way people feel about your main character. PA's are the primary way to alter feelings and I will do a PA FAQ to help.
I've been trying for a Rena/Dias ending for a while and have yet to see it, but I can't help but feel I'm almost there. The last time I ended up with Rena/Ashton. OI! Wasn't too bad though. Kinda cute. It's hard to get the Rena/Dias ending since there are no darned PA's with Dias in the entire game. You can find him, but you can't interact with him. Typically, he says one thing and you're back on your own again. What's up with that? If I ever find out the sequence to getting that ending, I'll make certain to post the exact steps I took.
Anyway, here's the initial relationship values when you first recruit someone: To read the table, the names on the blue column are the primary character. Find the character that you want to compare along the top and drop down to see how the first name feels about them.
EX: I want to know what Rena feels for Dias. I find Rena in Blue and I trace over to Dias along the top. I drop down two rows and see that Rena has a 7 Friendship and a 6 Romance. I also want to know how Dias feels about Rena. I do the same and find out that Dias has a 7 Friendship and a 5 Romance for Rena. Time for Rena to write a romance novel, eh?
